When looking at your Magento website, you may want to effect exactly which products show up in what order on any particular category.   By default, Magento will sort by ‘best value’ in the backend, which shows up as ‘position’ in the frontend.   But what does this mean?

When a category is set to sort by position (best value) it will, by default sort products by ‘best value’.   However you can manipulate this as much as you want by add numbers (from 0 – infinity) in the position column of the category products section (see screenshot) – 0 being the first product to show up and on up from there.

Do note though that by default, all products assigned to a category are automatically given a sort order of ‘0’.   This basically assigns new products assigned to the category to the top of your list.  Watch out for this in case you have now ordered your products and are assigning new products to the category.
